Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams commented.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
