Cameron Norrie earned the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph marks Norrie's maiden win over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who is now the newest English competitor in the record books to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just tried to embrace my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant win of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the strongest player in the world right now."

The British player, seeded No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which represented the top run of performances in the young champion's young career.

The top seed looked to be progressing easily to a win early on as he cruised past the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie steadily fought his way into contention by executing with greater precision and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding points. His unceasing consistency and reliability steadily took its toll.

Through most of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The young star seemed especially uneasy hitting his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the sport for much of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, keeping up his steadiness, fitness and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to move forward and play aggressively.

Following battling for an extended period due to a significant physical setback and challenges with his game, the tennis professional fell as low as No 91 this season. After making the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the French Open second week after that, this victory further underlines the veteran's improvement as he seeks to return to the elite rankings and further. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his incredible achievements, is yet to figure out how to produce his best tennis in indoor conditions.
