The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
