UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
